Lake Okeechobee at a Glance
The Lake Okeechobee region is home to the largest lake in Florida
and the second largest in the continental United
States. Spanning over 700 square miles, Lake Okeechobee is an excellent
recreational destination for those wishing to fish, boat and birdwatch. Fishing
is also a popular pastime in and around the town of Lake
Placid, where over 27 freshwater lakes are within easy driving distance.
Located in the southern part of the region, the city of Clewiston
is known as sugar cane country, as it is one of the nation's leading sugar producers.
The Kissimmee
Prairie Preserve State Park permits visitors to take a swamp buggy tour
and get closer to the local flora and fauna. For those interested in the history
of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, guided tours such as the Billie
Swamp Safari are available around Clewiston. Naturally, Clewiston is also
a hot spot for fishing expeditions, therefore a number of fishing guides and
resorts can be found in and around the city.
